READING AND COMPREHENSION

THE FINAL PROPHET

There is not better way to discover Islam than to climb Mount Hira, a few miles from Mecca. Not far from this Holy City is Medina. The ascent provides insights into the nature of Islam and its Prophet. On the bleak top the winds blow with ferocity, creating a sense of elemental power, exactly as it must have been in the seventh century. The place speaks of a man looking for solitude, of a man searching for answers. Here the Prophet suffered the agony of rejecting an old religion, an experience the ecstasy of discovering a new one. There is nothing man –made on the peak. Abruptly loneliness, then awe, and finally exaltation fill the heart. In them most profound sense one is face to face with oneself.

The cave, the Prophet’s refuge, is tiny. It points to Mecca and the haram sharif, containing the Kaaba, is faintly visible. The drop from the cave is sheer, about 2000 feet. The climb itself is steep. When the Prophet received the call of Islam, he was 40.

At the age of 40, in 610 AD, on retreat on Mount Hira he saw a vision. This was the first call. It came in the form of angel ordering him to read.

“Read!” –(iqra!), this is the first word revealed to him.

Read in the name of thy Lord who created, created man out of clot of congealed blood. Read! And thy Lord is the most Bountiful, He who taught (the use of Pen, taught man that which he knew not)”.

The Prophet was the culmination of a long line of prophets –124000 of them– many no more than good, exemplary people. He was the last, the seal, of the prophets, the final messengers of God. The Prophet did not claim divinity. They were humans entrusted by God to spread the word. The Prophet of Islam had brought the Holy Koran which was, like him, final and cumulative. The concept of the Finality of the Prophets is the basic principle and the fundamental of Islam.
